How to Pay for a Postpartum Doula

If you would like to hire a postpartum doula, but feel that it is not in your budget, I am going to give you some ideas of how you could make it work.

When my husband and I were in our childbearing years, it would have been very difficult for us to afford this kind of care, so I get it.

So before I launch into my suggestions, I will describe in-home packages.

In-home Packages

I have six different packages from which to choose.

They range between 8-60 hours, in four hour visits, in your home.

Choose the one that’s right for you!

Also, I provide just hourly support versus purchasing a package.

My suggestions for affordability are:

  1. You could ask friends and relations to donate to creating a postpartum doula fund; this could be done through social media, or as a group baby shower gift.

  2. You will pay a down payment at your intake meeting; that will reduce the balance significantly.

  3. The balance can be paid in regular installments.

Remember that, for the most part, our current postpartum maternal care as a nation leaves many gaps. Basically, the only care a mother receives is her two and six-week checkups, and perhaps a follow-up phone call from the ob’s office. It does not take into account all the moving parts of a baby coming into a family, the mother’s mental and emotional well-being, as well as the father and that of the family.

A postpartum doula’s role is to mother the mother help care for the family so that everyone can find their new groove.
